Review: iGTD

A program that I have come to love is a free (for now) task management application called iGTD. It is a simple and powerful tool for keeping things organized within your life. It can handle personal projects, work projects, and everything in between.

Contexts and Projects

iGTD’s ease of use is excellent. You can easily make it to work the way that you think and process tasks. There are two primary ways that I use it to track my ‘todo’ items.

1. Contexts
A Context is like “home” or “work” or “design” or “weblog.” When I sit down to do design work I open up my design context to see what needs to be done. Within each todo item I can set a priority, a due date, add contacts and tags and put in notes that correspond to it.

2. Projects
You can also start new projects, such as “The Call Institute Brochure.” Within those projects you can also have as many todo items as you like. Then, same as within a context, when I sit down to work on a specific project I can see what needs to be done.

iGTD and .Mac

One of the primary reason’s I love iGTD is because it syncs to dot Mac. It doesn’t just sync on one computer but I can have two computers running iGTD and it will sync them both to stay up to date with one another. This is so helpful for me since I am away from my desk on my laptop about 50% of the time, but do the majority of my work on my Mac Pro.

@ Shawn: Arrgg!! More reasons to switch from a PC! But the money ….

Any similar solutions for Windows? (I currently use Vitalist – but a desktop version?)

iGTD is an amazing application. I’ve been using it for the past few weeks and it has revolutionized the way I “get things done.” I find myself much more organized and remembering things more often because of this app. Highly recommended, and great review too!

@ Adam: Something that I’m learning to do better is to trust myself.
Even if nothing is on my todo list then I have this feeling like there’s something I should be doing.

Well – I’ll answer my own question.

FusionDesk has turned out to be a remarkable little app for Windows GTD’ers. It even has a very “Microsoft Word 2007″ feel to it.

    Windows users, check it out!
