The Lion, the Witch and my Laptop

May 15th, 2007 | Nerdery, Personal | Syndicate Content

C.S. Lewis has invaded my computer. You could call it Mere Nerdery. It all started when I got my 12″ PowerBook two years ago and named it Reepicheep.

Reepicheep Laptop

Now, even my peripherals are named from an element within his books. My backup hard drive is dubbed “The Wardrobe” my iPod is “Turkish Delight” and my little USB jump drive goes by “Edmund.”

Narnian Peripherals

It doesn’t stop there. Even my home wireless network has a name. And what an appropriate a name it is: Narnia.

U P D A T E : I’ve added a Mac Pro to the Family, and it goes by Azlan.

Those naming schemes have taken what I’ve known and experienced to a whole new level.

My laptop is named Azariah (more often known as Abednego). There’s no greater scheme that it falls into.

@ Jeff: I just laughed out loud.

@ Esther: But if you’re using your computer all day for various tasks like bible study, note taking, emailing, and work why not spice it up a bit to make it a little more enjoyable?

@ Loud: Maybe I should try to learn how to do that while riding a bike?

As noted previously, you and I share the same naming convention. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me — we already share the world’s coolest name. ;)

“this is only a computer. It is a tool for me to use, it is only a computer!”

    Nope. Didn’t work, Esther. Sorry.

Love the name schemes! I have been far too boring; that’s going to change! I also read somewhere that you should name your wireless network vicious sounding names to intimidate would be “hackers”.

@ ChriS: You could name your wireless network “Click here to watch your computer explode before your eyes.”

Eh? I dunno about THAT, but you should rename (and repassword) your network so that it isn’t stolen out from under you.
