Spring Mix Tape

iTunes style Mix Tape
When I graduated High-School I spent all my graduation money on two things: A new Dell laptop (yes, I used to be a PC evangelist), and an extremly loud sound system for my car. This sound system was a-mazing. And I particularly loved it when spring came because I could roll down the windows and thump my system so loud.

Every spring there was one particular song I just had to put on. It’s not that great of a song, but I just found it on iTunes and to celebrate I’ve put together my spring mix-tape post. May these songs be your friends on car rides with the windows rolled down and hammock afternoons with lemonade.

The Tracks (with some commentary)

What are you listening to this spring?

Great idea for a post, might have to do something similar. Didn’t know you were a Coldplay fan, they are my favorite band, but Fix You has to be my favorite song.

Hey Shawn… this really has nothing to do with your post but I’ve seen you play drums for Justin Rizzo on GodTV and I just want to say that it’s awesome to see you really enjoy yourself as you play. As an acoustic guitar play who’s mad about drums and rythm while I play, it was just really cool to see!

    God Bless,

Thanks for this Shawn - I’d be embarrassed to put my high school playlist here - too much rap, and even though they were the “clean version”, still very bad for me. Thanks Jesus for showing me a better way.

Wait….No Upton? Rita? McMillan? Come on!

Second Question (err fourth…) - what’s your take on secular music? Has it changed over time? I think there are some definite great artists out there, and I believe all genuine creativity comes from God, the creator, but I go back and forth sometimes on secular music.

I love blaring rock and metal during warm weather, but during spring I pull out my jazz CDs. Nothing says spring in Kansas City like Charlie Parker.

@ Ryan: My stance on secular music? I had a feeling someone would bring that up. I think there is nothing wrong with someone who does not listen to secular music. I used to turn off any secular music for one week a month. My friends thought I was “going too far”, but after over a year of doing it, they became convicted a bit and it helped spur us all on for focusing on the reality and necessity of worship.

My personal conviction on listening to secular music is mostly related to lyrics and the ’spirit’ of the music. If there is cussing and blatant slanderous lyrics I won’t listen to it. Also if it has obvious anger tones I avoid it. Really though, I listen to my spirit. Does this song make me feel queezy? If so then turn it off.

I’ve gotta give it up to you for including Project 86, they are probably the best band to ever exist. They would come to Nashville all the time when I was in high school and I never missed a show. Defiantly a good pick.

@ JM: I have tried to see Project so many times but it falls through every time. They’re coming out here in a few weeks and I have every intention on seeing them.

I’m listening to a lot of Mortal and Fold Zandura. Massive points to anyone who’s heard of them…

I remember seeing Project 86 once…that was the show where Watashi Wa announced they had been signed. It was also the last show where I was part of the Central Coast hardcore/punk rock scene (it was all word of mouth, so if you missed a show and didn’t know the right people…)

@ Idhrendur: You must be older than I thought if you’re listening to Mortal and Fold Zandura. I remember when Fold came out with their first EP and “La Futura.” I listened to that song non-stop for about a month.

When Jerome left joined Switchfoot it was the best thing that happened to those guys.

I recently saw a note about one of these music groups from Dave Workman, pastor at the Cincinnati Vineyard http://daveworkman.blogspot.com

“The opening music to the message is a great tune by Mutemath called, naturally, Peculiar People. And for you music geeks out there, that’s the keyboardist and vocalist from the best overlooked band with one of the coolest CD’s of 2000: Earthsuit’s Kaleidoscope Superior. It was a classic.”

You just went up 10 points on the cool factor. 5 points are for having Mutemath on your list and another 5 for it being the song “Plan B.” I was totally rocking out to that song in the car on the way home from work earlier this week.

@ JP: The drummer for MuteMath was also in Earthsuit.

@ Emily: 15 whole coolness points? Sweet!

Shawn, i remember your pumping sound system, it was always fun to blast “lucky denver mint” in it. That song has great bass. Right now i will post three of my songs for spring…

Put Your Records On - Corinne Bailey Rae
(She is amazing check her out if you have not)

Asleep At the Wheel - The Cinematics
(Yes i too am pumping the Cinematics this spring)

    I Think I’m In Love - Beck
(Innovator of music this song is so fun)

So there are just a few of my spring mix tape. Love the fact you are pumping old school “grammertrain” i saw them live once, it rocked.

I kinda got into Mortal and Fold Zandura well after they had stopped producing stuff. I have a friend six years older than I who got me into Mortal, and Fold Zandura happened as I watched the price on a copy of Ultraforever slowly drop over a couple years. I finally bought that album out of sheer curiosity.
