Review: Geek & Mild

May 02nd, 2007 | Nerdery,Reviews | Syndicate Content

If you lean more towards the nerdery on The Fight Spot then I imagine that Geek & Mild will become one of your new favorite reads. Sean writes with a flare and pizazz that is enjoyable and enlightening to read. In addition to the fact that he is a Christian – which makes reading his articles all the better.

HOW I FOUND GEEK & MILD

Long before I stepped into the world of RSS, I bookmarked by favorite blogs. Last month I was rumagging through those bookmarks and cleaning out sites that I don’t read anymore (or that I have in my RSS reader). During the process I clicked on a few old favorites to see what they were up to. This led me to Sporadic Nonsense’s April Fool’s post which was part of all the woo-ha-ha over Dan‘s logo.

In the comments section there was a guy named Sean. Spelled wrong, but I still clicked. Low and behold I discoverd seansperte.com a.k.a. Geek & Mild.

ABOUT GEEK & MILD

Once I had stumbled upon Sean’s site and marveled at his design I began browsing around to learn a little more. Here’s what I found out:

Sean Sperte is Geek & Mild. Sean is 26 years-old and is the Director of Web Ministries at The City Church in Seattle. He is happily married, and has no children (yet).

…The name for this site is a play-on-words from character qualities attributed to Jesus Christ. I believe the origin of “meek and mild” comes from an old Christian hymn titled “Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild.” It’s important to note that meek is defined as “self-controlled or reserved”, and that although my personality is anything but mild, I do reserve my natural propensity for geekhood rather well. You could say, for instance, I’m a closet geek.

“So,” said I, “this guy writes about geekery through a Christian lense? Sounds like my kind of site.” I mashed down on the RSS feed and never looked back.

THE DESIGN

A good site design is critical to getting a one-off visitor to turn into a repeat reader. Sean’s site does this perfectly. You can just look at without even having to reading anything. The layout is stunning. Every detail has been tended. From the shadows on the navigation tabs to the grungy lines on the archives page. The consistency, beauty and ease of use is astounding. Even the search box looks good:

SOME GEEK or MILD POSTS

Expression Engine-esque
Although I don’t use Expression Engine to run The Fight Spot, Sean’s posts have been interesting none-the-less. And I bet Andy would get appreciate them, as would anyone running an EE powered site. Some of his posts posts on Expression Engine can be found here, here and here.

Reepicheep
As if his name and site focus weren’t enough parallels. Sean named his new iPod Reepicheep. Same name as my PowerBook G4 (oh, he has one of those too, by the way).

Twitter
A great look at the what and why of Twitter along with some how-to’s and resouorces.

Is there a Chicken Burrito or John Elway Fan in the house?
Over a year ago on his wife’s site, Sean wrote a post listing franchises he would like to own. Among the list was Chipotle and the Denver Broncos. ’nuff said.

Get Your Shhh On

Sean was smart enough to start up a virb group for all the Seans, Shauns and Shawns out there.

As cool as a chipotle franchise, would be, they don’t offer them :(

You can, however, buy their stock instead. Most franchise companies will charge you 10,000 to 100,000 for a franchise of their company. That same money invested in chipotle over the past year would have just about doubled.
