Where do You Stand With Song of Solomon?

March 10th, 2007 | Weekend Survey | Syndicate Content

Starting Monday I am writing a series of posts on life in God based on verses from Song of Solomon. To make the series more focused to the readers I would love to know some of your favorite verses, and / or some of your non-understood verses. Have you ever read Song of Solomon? Is it a hard book for you to get into? Are there any verses or topics that you would like me to teach on or do you have any questions you would like me to answer?

If you’re interested guest writing a post from SOS please contact me via my contact page.

I love Song of Solomon. I’ve read it ever since i first heard about it at IHOP. Have been captivated by that book ever since. I must say that it’s harder to understand as I reach chapter 7 and mostly chapter 8. I can relate with the bride (and even with the daughters of jerusalem at times) all throughout chapters 1-6. But then it gets hard for me. I suddenly don’t really understand who is the church anymore, when the bridegroom is speaking.
    I’ll give you one example:

Sos8:8 we have a little sister, and she has no breasts. What shall we do for our sister on the day when she is spoken for?”

I thought this was the church/daughters of jerusalem speaking about the bride. But i’ve heard it’s the other way around… Reading the context i can’t seem to figure why that is..

oh i looooveee song of songs and i loooooveee that you’re doing this!!! it makes your blog all the more cooler!
oh, favorite verse, among them are for sure: sos 3:4 “when I found him whom my soul loves. I held him and would not let him go”.
Oh, to encounter Jesus in such a way that you can say, this is the one i will pour out my alabaster jar on..my devotion, the passion of my heart belongs to him.

and then verse 5:9 “what is your beloved more than another beloved, most beautiful among women. what is your beloved more than another beloved, that you charge us so?”
to stand in pain and trial, adversity and proclaim the beauty of your bridegroom, leads to that question..and from that place we can proclaim why he is our beloved. why we do what we do. why we pray, why we fast, why we lay down our lives on the altar…sweeeeeeet!

honestly, it’s a hard book to get into for me. There are small segments that I really get…and the rest are just kinda “huh!?”

I actually find some of the chapters almost creepy..especially 8:8

I would be interested in hearing you teach on it. Maybe do a series where you go through it one chapter at a time.

I love the Bridal paradigm taught at IHOP (and found in the writings of contemplatives through the ages). And I appreciate some of the mainstream evangelical teachings applying SOS to the man and woman marital relationship.

I guess my question is more of a global/synthesis question: Why do these teachings have to be either one or the other? Is there a way to go deep into the heart of God (Bridal paradigm) and also learn through the Song of Songs what God’s heart is for our human relationships?

Looking forward to seeing what the Lord puts on your heart in this series -

i was introduced to the bridal paradigm through catholic writings and was drawn to IHOP primarily because of it. the fact that a bunch of protestants were embracing an allegorical interpretation - but with very strong biblical exegesis - well, it changed my life. also: if anyone has richard littledale’s commentary on song of solomon, could I borrow it?

SoS was a little hard for me to get into as well. I heard the 20 part teaching on it and it makes sense but just really blows my mind… I mean seriously, I’m no good for days/weeks afterwards. But its one of those things that I just have to keep going over and over to wrap my mind around.

Parts of it are really clear, but other parts are kinda blurry and I agree with Evan giving me the “huh!?” reaction.

I think I need to spend a year on it and nothing else just to crack the surface.

I’d love to see you go through an overview and/or chapter by chapter… and maybe giving practical life applications of the song of solomon as it relates to our heart/life.

Song of songs 2:10 My Beloved said to me “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away with me. For the winter is past and the rains have come and gone…. My favorite…

I found him and I would not let him go…..3:4
How beautiful you are my love, your eyes are those of doves. 4:1

Song of songs is my FAVORITE book in the whole bible. I am always touched by the Fathers heart when reading this chapter.. He really does love us this way and the man who feels His love like this is a blessed one I think….
