Just curious: Have you upgraded to Vista? Are you going to? What about those of you on Macs? Will you be upgrading to Leopard? If I were on a PC I would upgrade to Vista, but I’m not too sure I will be upgrading to Leopard later this year. What about you?

I have a few PCs, and I have no plans on upgrading to Vista anytime soon (if ever). XP does everything I need, i don’t need fancy GUI stuff.
On my main machine, a Mac, i am thinking about weather to upgrade to Leopard. The features Apple has shown so far are nice, but not enough to make me upgrade.

I will be up-grading to Leopard probably within the first few weeks of launch. I think the existing features that have been announced look good, but that the ones to come will be better, hence the secrecy. The thing with Leopard is that it will run faster on my iMac than Tiger does, as it will on my iBook (although I probably won’t upgrade that), OS X gets more and more streamlined with each new edition.
I’m interested as to why you won’t upgrade to Leopard?

We’re going to upgrade to Leopard because it sounds like fun and we got four other people to buy the family pack with us so it will be pretty cheap to take the plunge.

If I buy a Mac this fall (read: if G-d chooses to bless me with lots and lots of money), I’ll be happy with whatever Apple gives me. I’m certainly getting tired of Windows. But if I do go for a PC, I’m thinking of installing Linux or a Linux-based OS. Currently trying to get Ubuntu to run on my old laptop … not going so well.

I would have to buy a totally new computer for Vista. It would cost too much to upgrade my computer to meet Vista’s minimum requirements.

@ Troy: God willing, I too hope your car can make the drive.
@ Phil: I’m not sure if I want to spend $150 on a new OS that doesn’t seem to have any features that really appeal to me yet. I didn’t think about Leopard being more streamlined to run quicker on my PowerBook. I guess I figured with each upgraded OS they ran a little bit slower on a dated machine.
@ Ducky: Ben at open switch made the plunge into Ubuntu. He has a lot of excellent posts on setup and integraton. Links I, II.

Because I work at a tech support call center and see so many issues with Vista and the internet - from internet protocal to things that cause it to be hard to trouble shoot - I can’t imagine putting it on my PC. For instance Vista runs an IP v6 and IP v4 at the same time. That can cause some serious trouble when you’re on the internet. It also doesn’t have a telnet function on it unless you manualy go and turn it on.
Going into better telnet on OSX is easier than messing with Vista - and I dread Mac calls at work because they can get complicated.
On the other hand, the lack of Mac calls is making me almost want to get one.

I took an entire day out to upgrade my notebook to Vista.
Hours and hours later, on the final reboot it started cycling thru to a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death), then rebooting, back to the BSOD… over and over again.
I had no choice but to back out and let it reinstall XP. Fortunately it did that fine.
Turns out my notebook has an incompatible video driver.
Makes me appreciate that Mac TV ad all the more now!

I brought a new PC with vista installed. It’s ok but not exactly groundbreaking. XP was good, my advice is there is no need to pay to upgrade. You wont get a great deal for your money.

I don’t have enough RAM to take XP to its full potential…I doubt I meet the requirements for Vista.
And let me be the one to go out on a limb here and say that Apples are disgusting. That’s right, I oppose the cult. Especially since Apple has left behind the Motorolla parts, and is switching to Intel. The last big advantage is gone…

I’ll be holding off on Leopard - so far no features I’ve seen are ‘killer’ enough to make me want to sell my kids to get it, which I’d have to do given that I need Photoshop CS3 more, and that will probably bankrupt me. If I was on PC, I’d hope I’d have learned my lesson by now and have loaded Linux or something, but I woudln’ttouch Vista with a barge pole, or any other pole - it has one fatal flaw - teh word Windows in its title; it’s doomed forever.

I am currently using a PC and will not be upgrading to Vista. I currently just don’t see the point at all. Nothing says to me that it is worth the money that I would have to pay for it; by the way, the British prices are exorbitant. There is a huge difference between the USA prices and the British ones.
I currently don’t own a Mac; however I am looking to invest in one when I can afford it. I cannot afford it at the moment but I would like to find out more about the difference between Tiger and Leopard, and see if it is worth waiting until Leopard is released. Although like I say, that entirely depends on my money situation…

@Shawn - I think Adobe do them, and I think they are called ‘multi-user’ licences, which I think loosely translates as ‘we at adobe recognise that you aspire to be a big corporation, and we wish to cash in on that by offering you a multi-seat licence at an extortionate price’.
Of course, I could be wrong

Mac users seem to be early adoptors, without fear, while PC users are extremely skeptical about a decent early release by Microsoft.

I won’t be upgrading to Vista anytime soon for three reasons: 1) it’s too early, 2) DRM issues and 3) my PC doesn’t meet the hardware requirements. Rather than spend the money on a new motherboard, processor and memory (let alone buy a whole new box), I just want to keep the hardware I’ve got running as long as it still meets my needs (so I guess my #4 is that I’m cheap).
I did recently replace my PC’s maxed out hard drive, slow video card and ailing CPU fan for a little over $100. When I reinstalled XP I also partitioned the drive for Ubuntu Linux. I’m having a blast learning a new OS. While I have wanted a Mac for a long time, I just might become enough of a Linux geek to push that purchase further and further back.

I won’t be upgrading to Vista. Microsoft’s new OS releases always need at least one service pack before they begin to have any stability.
I will upgrade whenever it is time to buy a new machine. I will get to experience the joys/challenges of Vista when my neighbor’s new PC arrives in a few days.

After following this conversation for the last few days, we had this conversation at work night before last. All I can say is you sure can tell the difference between mac and pc users. The mac peeps all want to upgrade, no questions asked. Us PC users are wary until the first (or second) service pack comes out.
I love working tech support sometimes.
As I’ve said before, I’m not upgrading yet. I have the capability but I hate the problems I’m already seeing.
