The Mullet.

Is it coming back? Is it cool? Is it too much? And what about girls with mulletts? I hear that’s in.

You decide…

Its definately not coming back. As for girls with mullets - I think that they look really butch, and not in the least attractive.

On a different note - Nice blog! I’m pretty new to the scene, but I have learnt quite a bit from you already!

All I’m saying is, think about what you’re going to think when you look back in 5 years, then get a haircut.

I must say, though, I’m digging girl styles with the stylized faux-hawk.

I am definately digging the guys mullets. I think they can be pretty sweet if it’s done right. As for girls, I can’t recall ever seeing a girl with a mullet and thinking to myself, “man my wife would look hot if she did that.” We’ll see I guess.

@ Ben: You said “We’ll see I guess.” Does that mean H is going to get her hair cut?

Um, don’t count on it my friend. Why don’t you have Anna try it and see if it catches on?

Well, since I have what my hairdresser calls a “modern mullet” I think I am qualified to say yes, a new and improved version of 80s hair is in, especially on the west coast. It just takes fashion trends forever to make to Missouri and then a few more years to catch on.

Tell me about it. I heard everyone’s getting excited about this new cool clothing that opened up downtown: “Bugle Boy”

I can’t believe this is your blog! John and I were just discussing our adoption fund raiser (see blog) and wanting to find someone who was brave enought to auction off their currently long hair to have it cut into a mullet the night of our event!
    ANY TAKERS!
Come on, even if you hate it, you can always, just cut it all off and have short hair when your done? How bout it MOTLONG, you’re reading this aren’t you!

  12. Shawn said:

@ Tracie: I just got a haircut last night. Otherwise I’d do it. Anything is worth it for adoption…

Marcus is 1/2 way there already, maybe you can get him to do it. Or Tim! People would pay big bucks to see him mulletized.

As a newcomer to the region: Amen to the MO trends part.

The mullet resurfaced in cutting-edge style again a few years ago, and is definitely on it’s way OUT again by now. If you were in a major metro, I’d say you’d have about two minutes left to get in on this trend before it’s over again.

In MO, you’d probably still be a misunderstood trendsetter at this point. So go for it, if that’s your standard.

Sorry for the snobbery and letdown–hence the anonymity for now.

    @ Tracie: I’ll see what I can do…

@ 597: Thanks for being the first number to comment on my site. You are welcome here and I didn’t notice any snobbery. I’m from Colorado and saw the mullitization facination emerging several years ago and has now died away. But here in MO a few people have been showing up with mullettesque haircuts, and I got inspired to blog about it.

@ Andy: are you telling us you’ve got one?

No, I don’t think I could ever have a mullet. Unless our resurrceted bodies have mullets…

What Andy said is true. I’ve been living in the South now for fifteen years and it has never gone away completely. For the record, I haven’t had one since 1991. :D

The point to me isn’t whether the mullet is in or not (it’s deffinately getting its fair share of takers)… it’s whether or not it’s a good idea.

Ben, I’d faint dead away if Havillah went under the scissors. However, she’s just cool enough that if she did I might reconsider my position on the whole style :)

    It’s just can’t come back in style….
This from a woman once married to a mulletted man (perm and all); and mother of two tiny mulletted boys. Yes, I mullettized my two young children, believe it or not!!!

    I shudder at the thought!

@Shawn: I think I told the barber to leave it a little long…just trim it up around the ears and stuff. I didn’t even know what a mullet was back then, but what he cut I later learned was a mullet: business in the front; party in the back. It was awful! I let it grow out and cut it myself through college (into more of a shaglet). ;)

@ Scott: What about “Pleasing the boss, pleasing the ladies.”

A funny story: My aunt told us how she went to the barber and said, “O.K. now…whatever you do, don’t give me one of those millits.”

Wait, was the mullet ever out of fashion? (j/k)

The mullet is tragically fascinating for the way it attempts to merge dichotomous hair expressions into one. The mullet can only be likened to a car wreck, and it has the same effect on the passersby: we all crane our necks to get a good look at it in order to satisfy our fascination for the abomination.

SIt and say the word ‘Mullet’ over and over and over again. The clue as to why they never were, and never will be, cool, and the very reason why they should never be allowed to make a comeback - there should be a movement or something to ensure it never happens - lies in the very word itself. Go on, say it over and over and over - try it any number of different ways - different intonation and accents - and tell me I’m wrong :)

Sarah Sarah Sarah Sun Kim…..I can only assume your disdain for the mullet is rooted in lack of chronological perspective and not a knee-jerk, intellectual response to the golden years of American history, AKA The Eighties.

The Mullet - business in the front, party in the back - was the epitome of hipness in an age that gave us Tears for Fears AND Ronald Reagan. These were days to be reckoned with, I assure you.

Randy, I love the 80s for the same reason that I love the mullet: it produced so much fodder for justifiable derision. And I, as a child and product of the 80s, include myself in that mish-mash. So, I don’t mind at all being the butt of any jokes, as mocking as they may be… =)

I don’t think they ever went away in Rural areas or Canada. Urban hipsters discovered “white trash chic” a few years ago, but it has been going strong for a while.

Mullets…horrible hair cut for sure. I live in the south, so I’ve never known society without them. Even some of my family members have them.

As bad as they are for men, they are worse for women. At the college I went to there as a woman on the maintainance crew who had a she-mullet. I didn’t realise she was a woman until the night of what became known as “the great flood” when they could only send women workers onto the floor to start with to see what was wrong. (As if the 6 dorm rooms full of water that were reported didn’t give the problem away - hello, send in a plumber!)

    Shawn,

I know I missed the rest of this conversation, but just wanted to say thanks (in case you actually go back and read this) for the sympathetic and kind response. I’m also new to your blog, and I think it’s fantastic. You’re obviously doing a great job. I plan to come around more, with a more alpha-, and less -numeric pseudonym.

    Shalom.

Everytime i see someone with a mullet i just want to cry…….or point a finger and laugh uproariously at them, either one works for me. Please tell me they’re not coming back. They were bad enough the first time. And I agree with Emily Mae, on men they’re pretty horrid, on women they’re just sad.
