When it boils down to it, all a blog is is post after post after post. A massive database of mental exhale through your keyboard and out your modem for all the world to read.
But that exhale is what makes your blog what it is. Don’t just let it fly into the wind.
Here are 5 ways you can post your best.
1. Use visuals
A picture is worth a thousand words. Throw something up there to help convey your idea and alleviate the amount of text. I often use the same image for multiple posts that are part of a theme, such as the Rock Your Blog series you’re reading right now.
2. Make it easy to read:
Almost everyone who reads your blog read is also reading someone else’s. Probably several blogs every day. And most people skim.
Serve your readership, and make your blog easily ’skimmable‘. This is working with your readers and giving them something helpful so that they don’t see your long, thick posts and just move on. They can skim and if your content is good, you will hopefully pull them in for more.
3. Have some personality:
This is why we all love Randy. His personality comes blazing through every post. You feel like you’re listening in on a conversation between him and his buddies.
Talk to your readers instead of at them. Use fun words. Mix business talk with living room conversation. Make them feel like they’re getting more than just information. They want to get a little bit of you with every post.
4. Don’t be too personal:
Keep your posts from crossing that line where people become unsure of how to respond to what you’ve said - leaving them with an awkward feeling.
It is easy to just lay things out there without thinking about the consequences; but your blog is still a public arena with you as the keynote speaker. Chances are most of your readers are people you’ve never actually met.
5. Be controversial:
I wouldn’t say something rude just for the sake of attention, but go ahead and be bold. Make clear lines on where you stand. You don’t have to write about the same things everyone else is talking about.
Just don’t be stupid: Make your point in a manner that honors others and the truth.

Thanks for the good advice! And let me take this moment to say “Forgive me, for I have sinned. It’s been 5 weeks since my last venture into your blog. I’ll do better in the future.”

Visuals definitely work. I personally use iStockPhoto to get some mood-enhancing images for posts I think need it. I suppose I’m not talented enough to create my own images like you Shawn.
