With millions of active blogs on the web and thousands starting every day who decides which ones are good and which ones are flops?
In a way it’s impossible to know the good versus the flops; Everyone has a different goal for why they began their blog. But, still, there are ways to measure a blog.
How do you define a successful blog?
- Technorati says a blog is succssful based on how many people link to it. Thus the most succsesful blogs are the most popular ones. (Hence the Technorati top 100)
- ProBlogger is dedicated to helping bloggers earn money. Thus defining a succseful blog as an income generating blog.
- 9rules say content and passion define a successful blog.
- Webalizer and Mint are two popular website stats programs. Many consider site visits (in combonation to reader participation) as the factor determining success.
- Feedburner is a RSS subscription manager. Keeping track of your total RSS subscribers and even giving you a badge to parade your number of readers.
Each of these could be accurate measurements for a successful blog, but none of them could simply be applied to any given blog to determine its amount of success.
You alone determine if your blog is successful
It’s all based on goals: What is your goal for blogging?
- If your main goal for blogging is to support yourself and you are making a full-time income then congratulations.
- If the focus of your blog is to be an online journal where you are sharing you heart for 1 or 1,000,000 then it’s not who reads your blog that makes it a hit but it’s what you write.
- For me, my blog is a place to have fun while talking about serious or casual matters. I truly enjoy writing and the enjoyment of keeping up the site while tweaking and perfecting it. What is most important to me is that I stay true to myself and my enjoyment of blogging.
What are the goals you have for your site and for blogging?

Shawn,
After all of the comments about spelling, check out successful on point #1. Fun stuff.
If I determined the success of my blog from traffic, my blog would probably be at the bottom of the barrel. In fact, that barrel would probably be on top of my blog.
I guess my goal is to write as well as I can, articulate my thoughts as well as I can, and be logically sound. In my Christian articles, I want to stick to the Bible as much as possible, while still sharing insight and experience with others. For my opinionated articles, I hope to shed a unique light on common issues.

Now that I have read your post again, it almost looks like you mis-spelled on purpose.

My goal for my blog is:
To share a little bit of my heart, to share what I do, and to have fun and write things people will enjoy reading.
