Covenant with our eyes

5LifepracticesThis is something that applies to guys and girls.

We all know that pornography and slime is all over the place. The internet, TV, billboards, movies. Everywhere. But making a covenant with our eyes means more than simply promising not to Google something bad.

As Christians we don’t have the right to look upon others in a sinful way. We don’t have the right to glance over there when we really know what it is we’re glancing at.

Girls, you shouldn’t be comparing yourself to others. They way they look or dress, etc…

We want to be fascinated with God and with His glory. This is a major doorway to seeing Jesus revealed through scripture and having a spirit of revelation resting on us.

“I will set nothing wicked (worthless) before my eyes” (Psalm 101:3)

“I have made a covenant with my eyes;” (Job 31:1)

“The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light…if then your whole body is full of light, having no part dathe bright shining of a lamp gives you light.” (Luke 11:24-26)

As a woman it is so difficult not to compare. American culture perpetuates the notion that woman are deemed valuable based on appearance and beauty, so envy seems to flow out of that mindset. I was reading 1 Corinthians 3 today and Paul was said that if there is envy in your heart you are still carnal and babes in Christ. Yikes! I want to walk in the spirit. I do not want to prevent my heart from taking in the deep things of God because of my inability to be satisfied in Christ. Your right, He alone should hold our gaze…

I’m a lurker on your blog, but I’m de-lurking because God is using your post and Stephanie’s comment to pierce my heart on this issue. I never thought about comparing myself to others as breaking the covenant with my eyes or as envy. I have struggled with this for many years. Now I have the conviction and revelation to ask for grace to stop. Thank you for sharing!

It’s not just in just in America, its like that here in the Philippines. Hi, stumbled upon your blog, wanted to post these words God placed in my heart just now.

It’s kinda sad that the world, the church, doesn’t see the beauty that God sees in her. people see physical beauty but what truly makes people beautiful we completely miss. It’s the YES that we have in our hearts in response to God’s call that makes us beautiful. It’s not physical or a good attitude or personality, it’s a heart posture, desiring to be fully the Lord’s, that even with the scars of sin in our lives, His love heals and fixes everything. our every desire all changed and directed towards a desire to pursue holiness. i really pray that the church will awaken and take confidence in Her beauty in the Lord. I think this is a major struggle for alot of people, this is true to me too, but coming to realize the beauty that captured the heart of the Lord (Songs 4:9), which is in us. No matter what we look like, the style we have, anything, the fragrance of the beauty of Jesus Christ, those eyes continue to gaze on us day and night delighting in that YES in our hearts.

yeah, just to add to what others said, it is hard to NOT compare yourselves to others. Even when you don’t compare to others (the way they dress or look or anything) then it is still easy to compare to other christians when it comes to their gift, their talent. For example when you see this really cool beloved wotshipleader, and you lead worship as well then it is soooo easy to say “I need to get there as well”. So..you’re comparing. That is sneaky huh? Like a little fox because you can tell yourself that it’s not as bad as comparing to Naomi Campbell.
When I think about it now..when you keep comparing yourself to even a worshipleader, then you will always fall short to what God wants you to be. Great post shawn!
