Firsts

…the first time I walked into the IHOP Prayer Room
It was in the old trailer. It was a thursday 10 pm - midnight devo. This guy named Steve was playing a classical guitar with nylon strings. He had bushy hair, a thick red beard and sang like an irishman. Songs I’d never heard before like “I am the vine, you are the branches.” Is this what it’s like here 24/7?

…my first Chiptole
Chicken burrito with black beans, tomato salsa, corn salsa, sour cream, cheese.

…the first time I noticed my wife
I was home from college for the summer, and a huge group of us went to Applebee’s after youth group. I saw her as I was leaving and thought she was cute. I sat down and introduced myself.

…the first time I played drums at IHOP
Seth Parks was leading. Stuart Greaves was on bass. I was clueless. I’m ashamed to admit I used a rain stick at one point.

…the first time I got a tatoo
Right Shoulder. 18 years old. Superman. I don’t regret it.

…the 2nd time I went snowboarding (the first wasn’t as memorable)
9 years ago. I was with my best friend Chris. We went to Loveland - the red-headed step child of the Rocky Mountain slopes. The next day I went to Gart Sports and bought $400 worth of snowboard gear.

What are some firsts that you remember?

The first time I fired up my [then] brand spanking, straight out of the box, iBook. This day marked my being released from the bondage of Windoze and to walk in freedom with Tigers. those first few moments will live with me forever…

No, seriusly, I am that much of a sad case, they really will :)

Then iChatting my wife to tell her I was contacting her on my new iBook (I was Stateside, and the Mac was a gift from a generous friend, and a total surprise to me) and her stunned silence, followed by the words ‘You had better be joking!!!’

I thought about listing my first Mac experience but decided to leave it out in hopes that someone else would share theirs. That was beautiful Andy.

The first time I saw the ocean, only 4 months ago, I was taken back by the grandeur and beauty of it all. The roar was deafening, and the breaking waves were breath-taking! I even got to see some whales.
The first time I went into the ocean I was taken back by the numbing sensation I got from my toes to my nose, and the mouth full of salt water I involuntarily swallowed.

The first time I sipped an Aveda hot tea — I went to get a haircut at Xiphium and they offered me a delightful beverage. It was more of an experience than a drink. Better than the ‘bucks, better than Chuckroast - it was flat nirvana. I got home and told Randy, “I think if they made an herbal cigarette out of that stuff people would smoke it!”

Favorite Firsts: First Time Eating Chinese Food I was 19.  No kidding.  Grew up in North Dakota - ’nuff said. First Time Meeting Kelsey College senior (yours truly) meets cute college freshman who is standing in Coach House Gifts along with their mutual friend.   Friend dissolves into oblivion.  Ten months later we’re married.  First Time at the Burn I distinctly remember nosing the rented RV out onto the playa, past the “Test your home made flame throwers here” sign and into the crowd of 35,000 people, wondering “What have we done?!?!?”.   That week also marked my first Dr. Megavolt show and first serious theological discussion with a man wearing nothing but a rubber chicken.   I actually met the good Doctor Megavolt four years later in the same spot as he drove around in a pink fuzzy golf cart.  First Time Speaking in the IHOP World Mike asked me to do a Sunday night all-staff shortly after we moved here (a little over 3 years ago).   I misunderstood and thought he meant a 10 minute plug.   Marci Sorge tipped me off at the last minute that I was the only speaker.   Not the first time someone has condensed 10 minutes of material into an hour….

The first time I knew I was pregnant I got a frozen Snicker out of the freezer and sat on the back deck and considered how my life had all the sudden changed.

I know it is cliche, but when I saw my oldest daughter for the first time. I couldn’t believe that I had Really just given birth to an actual Baby! I wasn’t even saved, but that experience definitely brought me closer. My husband was very excited and kept saying (almost shouting) “Hi Stephanie, I’m your Dad!” He said this over and over and I was concerned for her hearing. Twenty three years later, her hearing is just fine :)

@ Randy - I remember that first time you spoke. It was in the Prayer Room. Didn’t you rally a small army afterwards to go clean toilets for Jesus?

@ Kelsey -Aveda tea from Xiphium? Did you pay with ruples?

The first time I walked into the prayer room…
I had no pre-conceived notions of what it would be like. Knew virtually nothing about IHOP, never heard of Misty Edwards. I had brought a group of youth over a thousand miles to Onething 2005 and we got to KC a couple of days early. We walked into the prayer room about 11 pm and someone (Misty) was singing something about “how far will You let me go, how abandoned will You let me be?” and a couple hundred people were praying. In about one literal second I was completely undone by God and I have not been the same since. He said “This is what I made you for.”

The first time I went to a Onething conference: April ‘05, Vacaville. It was also the first extended fast I went on. I was hungry, literally. Crabby, a little. Didn’t really feel much, at first and wondering why everyone else seemed to be moved, touched, elated. Then Jesus wrecked me for a life time. It’s funny how God plans things.
