Anna and I are hosting three teens from the Summer Teen Intensive, and since tonight was their night off so we decided to give them a taste of Kansas City.
Anna cooked one of her famous chicken receipies and then we headed out for a visit to (what else?) The Plaza. When visitors are in town where else should you take them other than retail?
First stop: Starbucks. My drink of Choice tonight: Triple Grande Iced Carmel Macciato Ristretto. I don’t know if it means I’m cool or if it means I’m over the top when I order a drink that the barista doesn’t know how to make; “What’s ristretto?”
After Starbucks (and since I was the tour guide), we went to my next favorite store: Apple. I had a chance to see the new MacBook Pros with their glossy screens, but that was all because all the girls were just standing by the door as if the only reason they were inside was to get out of the humidity. Alas, they haven’t been conveted. I give them another week around IHOP until they realize that having an Apple laptop is a critical tool for studying escatology. (Isn’t that right, Randy?)
After the flop at Apple I decided that they would appreciate Anthropologie. BINGO! That store has all sorts of smelly soaps and fancy door knobs, and not a single techie gadget in sight. However there was a sweaty guy outside dancing quite poorly to distorted hip-hop music.
Our night was finalized by a strech Ford Explorer-Limo with a bunch of casually dressed teenagers hanging out the windows and sun-roof giving shout outs to people on the sidewalk. What is with those anyways? Did some kid win a prize at Pizza Hut for a free ride around town with him and 25 of his closest friends? Did some rich parents want to get their kids out of the house so they went in on it with 9 other parents?

Shawn…I think we need to go on a Coffee Shop Trawl and play “Stump the Barrista” at each one.
